Paolo Petrocelli

CLI Participant 2011

Paolo is an Italian arts administrator, entrepreneur, violinist, musicologist and music journalist.

Paolo received his artist diploma in violin performance from the Conservatory of Santa Ceciliaand graduated from the Sapienza University of Rome. He was admitted to the masters programmes at City University (London) and Royal Holloway, and specialises in the study of 20th Century European music, particularly British composers. He has published different essays on the music on Sir William Walton and the book The Resonance of a Small Voice: William Walton and the violin concerto in England between 1900 and 1940 (Cambridge Scholars' Publishing). In 2011, he was awarded a Beinecke Fellowship from the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library (Yale University) to continue his ongoing research into the music of William Walton.

As a violinist, he has performed with several Italian and international orchestras. In 2008, he won the Independent Music Awards in the Film Music section along with the electro-acoustic ensemble Zeitlet. He is a violinist of the indie-folk band Vinegar Socks.

Paolo is very active and strongly involved in European and international cultural organisations. He has been a commitee member of the Working Group Youth at the European Music Council (2008-2011). Since 2011 he is Ambassador for the Manifesto for Youth and Music in Europe and Youth Delegate of UNESCO. He is a also family member of The Festival One Week. One Europe. Berlin 2012, a 'platform where everyone who feels European can share the European spirit'.

He has worked as a music critic for the Vatican radio, asMedia & Marketing Manager at the Orchestra Symphonica d'Italia (with Music Director Lorin Maazel) andat the Artistic Direction and Library Departments of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, one of the oldest musical institutions in the world.
