Edinburgh: Creative Industry Policy by Creatives, for Creatives

In the final instalment of’s series of features on Edinburgh’s creative economy and cultural scene, the urban innovation platform discovers the influential Desire Lines document.

The actionable outcomes of the Desire Lines document are the result of the contributions of over 600 of Edinburgh’s creative community, from artists and musicians to media agencies and digital firms, following a series of meet-ups, surveys and online conversations. The grassroots lobby coincided with the government-commissioned Thundering Hooves report and stands apart for its inclusivity and deeper understanding of the needs of cultural and creative professionals in the city, outside of the 12 formalised annual cultural festivals the city is known for. With five clear, actionable recommendations, Desire Lines has certainly caught the attention of the City Council, who are now considering the appointment of a Director of Culture off the back of this influential lobby.
