An event with over 100 top creatives in the room was always going to make for a very lively evening and the h Club 100 winners reception didn’t disappoint. I had the great honour of naming The British Council Creative Entrepreneur category winners (read more about them below) and revealing which of them we will be taking away on a trip to make international connections with our global network.

Peter Gerard, Distrify

This year we received nearly 200 applications to our Creative Entrepreneurs category in the h club 100 list. Open to businesses working within the creative industries that are less than 10 years old, our Art form experts from British Council Arts judged the final ten.

It was very, very hard choosing just ten businesses to showcase - especially as the playing field was so wide! Eventually, we decided that the list should not only embrace diversity of the sectors– so our ten includes film, design, music and publishing- but should also showcase entrepreneurs at different stages of their journeys.

Jennifer Griffiths, Snap Fashion

Our art form experts at British Council helped us select the final ten for the list and all ten were then invited to an interview with Beatrice Pembroke, Director, Creative Economy and guest judges Patrick McKenna, CEO Ingenious and Sue Walter, CEO Hospital Club.

The prize is a unique week of networking and inspiration – meeting other innovators working in creative industries in some of the fastest growing markets in the world. The plan was to select three to go on the trip but after meeting them all we decided to break our own rules and select 5 instead!

So, congratulations to The Poundshop, Jenny Griffiths and Jay Miller who will be going to Brazil and Toby L and Peter Gerard who will be travelling to Nigeria.

Guy Armitage, Zealous

And congratulations to the five other entrepreneurs who make up our ten – Shain Shapiro, Sam Jewell, Guy Armitage, Teddy Leifer and The Literary Platform - all are brilliant examples of new UK creative businesses.

Winners with Caroline Meaby and Beatrice Pembroke of British Council Creative Economy team

It’s the first time British Council has worked with the h Club 100 but not the first time we have run searches for creative entrepreneurs. Our Young Creative Entrepreneur programme has the Creative Economy’s flagship programme since 2004, and through it, we’ve taken a number of new UK creative businesses overseas to make connections in exacting new creative markets including Mexico and India. Our UK alumni list includes Nikhil Shah, Sam Conniff, Anna Higgs and Ruth Daniel. Through the programme, we’ve also brought over 350 creative entrepreneurs from 50 countries to the UK to tap in to exciting trends here and to forge connections with UK businesses.
