Karena Johnson has been CEO/Artistic Director of The Broadway in Barking since January 2009.

Shehas worked for over a decade as a theatre director, producer and facilitator of emerging artists. Karena’s pioneering career includes being Acting Artistic Director of Contact Theatre in Manchester, Artistic Director of touring theatre company Kushite and five years as Head of Theatre Programming at Oval House theatre. Her work at Oval House was recognised when the theatre was awarded the diversity award for programming and audience development.

Karena has also been an Associate at Theatre Royal Stratford East, Nottingham Playhouse and NOW festival. She won the Jerwood Young Directors Award and Highly Commended Business Person of the year B&D Business Awards.

Karena’s directing work includes: Time Out Critic’s choice Under Their Influence by Wayne Buchanan, sold out production of Forty by Angie La Mar at Hackney Empire and critically acclaimed Underneath – nothing as silent as snow commissioned for the Black Sea Festival in the Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania.
