UK Young Publishing Entrepreneur (UKYPE) award 09
The UKYPE award celebrates entrepreneurial ability within publishing, and strengthens creative leadership, networking, and capacity building in the UK publishing industry. It also focuses on strengthening the engagement between the UK and publishing in emerging markets, and seeks to further stimulate the development of the UK publishing industry in an international business context.The aim is to find the most talented young entrepreneurs working in the UK’s publishing industry and give them the chance to find out more about what is happening out there, by becoming part of the British Council’s international network of young creative entrepreneurs.
UKYPE is taking place for the third time in 2009. It was awarded to Clare Christian (The Friday Project) for the first time and to Emma Hayley (SelfMadeHero) at London Book Fair in April 2008.
The award is a co-sponsored by London Book Fair and NESTA.
India 09 Study Tour
Six finalists have been shortlisted for the UKYPE 09 award. To coincide with India being London Book Fair 09's market focus, they will all take part in a 10-day study tour of the Indian publishing industry, attending the Jaipur Literary Festival, Kolkata Book Fair, and meeting with Indian publishers in Delhi. Upon their return to the UK, they will be judged by a panel of elite members of the UK publishing world, who will choose a winner based on their entrepeneurial skills and understanding of both the UK and Indian market.
The shortlisted finalists for UKYPE 09 are:
James is the Owner and Director of Bookkake, a new publishing house which uses an entirely print-on-demand process to publish new and classic works of transgressive literature. He also works as a consultant for Apt, a London-based design and marketing consultancy, planning and producing web and new media projects for clients in publishing and the arts. In addition, he researches, writes and discusses the ongoing impact of technology and the internet on the publishing industry at his website booktwo.org.
Director, Apt Studio
Peter founded Apt Studio, a consultancy that specialises in planning and producing innovative and commercially-focused new media projects for clients in publishing. Their list of clients includes HarperCollins, Granta, and Fourth State.
Director, Lucy Luck Associates
Lucy is the Founder of Lucy Luck Associates, a literary agency representing writers of quality fiction and non-fiction in the UK and throughout the world. Writers represented include Adam Thorpe, Catherine O’Flynn, Ewan Morrison, Jon Hotten, Doug Johnstone, Will Ashon, Tom Chesshyre, Rupert Wright, Amanda Smyth, and Rebecca Ray.
Director, Heavy Entertainment Ltd
Davyis Director of Heavy Entertainment, the UK’s largest producer of audiobooks. Working closely with the UK’s major publishers, the company records, masters and manufactures over 200 products each year. They operate their own recording studios and video edit suites in London, offering manufacturing services for CDs and DVDs along with bespoke design and printing services.
Rights Executive, Orion Publishing Group
Jessica works as Rights Executive for Orion Publishing Group, and is in charge of selling translation rights to Brazil, Portugal and Eastern Europe. Orion (owned by Hachette) is one of the leading trade publishers in the UK. It comprises a number of prestigious imprints such as Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Victor Gollancz and Orion Books, and offers a wide range of titles from literary fiction to biography, commercial fiction to political diaries and illustrated non-fiction to science fiction & fantasy.
Nii Ayikwei Parkes
Senior Editor, Flipped Eye Publishing
Nii is Senior Editor at Flipped Eye Publishing, a Manchester-based publishing house dedicated to publishing literary work on a non-for-profit basis. Flipped Eye has a strong focus on the development and the publication of affordable volumes, and they publish a significant percentage of female writers and writers of Black and minority ethnic heritage.
